Activities at Wykeham House Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Rachel Stevens

Activities Lead

I joined Wykeham House in October 2022 but I have worked doing activities in care homes since I left College, I began volunteering in a local home when I was 15 years old and then took on my first job in a care home when I was 18. I have enjoyed extending my knowledge to improve my work and have a Level 2 in Dementia Awareness, Domestic Abuse Awareness and Mental Health Awareness. I have also attended courses on End-Of-Life Activities as well as Dementia focused Activities. I love what I do and for me it is important that every day is a new day for our residents with new opportunities and a smiling face to come with it.

Meaningful one-to-one Sessions

As an activities team we not only provide group activities but individual one to one sessions. We have been working on making these as meaningful as possible by asking residents what they would like to do. Valerie recently lost her husband Tony, and wanted to take some time to look over their life together and remember the good times, the bad times but always the best times!

Friday Cooking Club

Our Memory Lane residents have been enjoying the benefits of a new activities program tailored to suit their needs. Memory Lane is our dementia unit and an important part of tailoring activities to suit the needs of dementia residents is to provide activities that will trigger memories and encourage independence. One thing we have all had to do at some point in our lives is cook. Our new Friday cooking club gives our residents the opportunity to do just that!

Charity Quiz Night

Earlier this month we held a charity quiz night in honour of British Heart Month raising money for The British Heart Foundation. We raised £72.50 for our chosen charity and our winners from The Horley Retirement Group received some bottles of Mulled Wine to share together. Members from the community joined our residents for a quiz hosted by Interrupt the Routine.

Happy Birthday Tony!

Tony celebrated his birthday this month, he had a wonderful afternoon. We had an entertainer here who played happy birthday for him on her saxophone and the residents sang along. Tony’s wife Valerie was very pleased to be part of this experience too, as they live on different sides of the building she loves that music and activities bring them together and take her back to how it used to be.

Residents enjoyed a trip to the local garden centre and were able to reminisce on their own gardens with support of the activities team and volunteers, and of course who can visit a garden centre without a lovely slice of cake in their café.
