What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"It's my first experience being in a care home. I'm very pleased. Thank you."

"My parents came to stay at Wykeham after both having a very long hospital stay following on from both been rushed to hospital within 1 week of each other. After a very upsetting and emotional few months, we needed to find a new home for both of them, somewhere they can be together, be safe and happy. We visited a few. Wykeham immediately on first step thru the door felt homely, welcoming and calm. Meeting the staff on arrival then other members gave reassurance. All questions answered, a tour of the home. A couple of meetings and further visits confirmed our feelings. Both parents moved in soon after, rooms close to each other. On their arrival, they met another lovely kind lady who gave reassurance to them along with helping settle them in at their pace. The staff we have also met. Again so lovely and kind. They spend every day together (as they wish to). Care is second to none. Activities, food, rooms, nursing, carers everything. Everyone has a kind heart and patience."

"Mum was in your care from April 2022 and we were very happy with her care there from all the staff and they were very good at making sure someone was with her constantly in her last hours. We, as a family, would not hesitate to recommend Wykeham House."

"My husband, who has Alzheimer's and Lewy Bodies Dementia has been at Wykeham House since May 2022. The staff, from every department, are wonderful with him. He is treated with kindness, love and great respect. All (whether working on his floor or not) know his name, will listen to his chatter no matter how busy they are and, if the music gets his feet tapping, give him a little dance. There are many activities which he is encouraged to join, regular visiting entertainers and trips out in the minibus. The atmosphere is one of peace and calm. I know he is safe and happy there and cannot praise everyone enough for the care that he is being given."

"For the last few months, my husband has been a resident, unexpected admission but I cannot fault the care we have both received. The friendliness of all staff, care and expertise is obvious. Not an easy decision to place someone but made easier by all staff."

"Every member of staff play their part in the care for the residents. Not only did they provide outstanding care for my grandmother, they looked after us too, especially on those difficult visits and during her end-of-life care. We are so pleased she spent her last three years of life in such a happy, engaging and caring home."

"My dad had been with Barchester Wykeham House Care Home for a few months. The friendliest and most warmest staff ever. They made him feel very welcome right from the start and he loved going out on the day trips. When Dad passed away, I rushed to be with him and the peaceful beautiful surroundings I encountered made everything so easy to deal with. Two staff were lying with him, holding his hands together with mood lighting and music. Just beautiful. Thank you Wykeham House. It's been a pleasure."

"Wykeham House is an excellent care facility where leadership is strong, and the care delivery to my father, living with dementia, was fantastic. Dad was admitted for palliative care, with three months to live; he lived three years and eleven months! We, as a family, were cared for by a dedicated, professional team. It is hard to find the words to express our lasting gratitude and admiration to all the staff - a superb dementia facility that we highly recommend."

"Some (most) staff listen to family. Many (maintenance especially) go above and beyond their job. Most staff work well as a team and involve myself and my opinions. The cheerful, happy atmosphere is friendly."

"Very happy with our choice. Mum has settled fairly well. Some carers are a lot more favourable than others. Integration with activities has enabled her to be wheeled out of her room and mix with others. So happy that the nurses and carers have got her out of bed each day. Food is a problem as she is a plain eater so needs assistance with eating and choices."

"My mum, who is 98 years old, has been at Wykeham House since April this year. It was a massive change for her, but I have nothing but praise for how welcoming the staff was and how much care was taken to make her feel at home. She has some dementia, and their care has enabled me to enjoy being with my mum and not have to worry about her well-being. I was worried at first, but all fears have been alleviated over the months, and my mum has been treated with dignity and kindness. She is happy and settled now, and although her memory and eyesight are not good, there have been lots of laughs and joy, which I am sure will continue. I cannot thank all the staff for the care and attention they give to my mum."

"It has been a pleasant experience from when I arrived in November 2020 to the present. The staff are friendly and helpful, and we have a good laugh together. There has been several health scares and the nurses have always acted professionally as well as being kind and reassuring. The food is of a high standard, in plenty of it. If I want any in particular then I can order it for the next day."

"All the staff, from the manager to the cleaning staff, have been nothing but helpful and accomodating and they have all built a relationship with my dad that is kind and supportive. We feel welcome here and nothing is too much trouble. It's a real family atmosphere. Food is also plentiful and well cooked and dad has been able to order what he wants, whether day or night! The staff work incredibly hard and any additional support is always available and all staff are open to conversation with me and dad. I'd highly recommend Wykeham House."

"Lockdown obviously affected many social activities normally held at Wykeham House. The highlight of our lovely English weather occurred on August 7th when the whole of Wykeham House was treated to a Fun Seaside Day, fish and chips, Ice cream cornets, fresh fruit platters plus lager were on the menu. The rear gardens were loving recreated by staff to remind us of our favourite beach time pleasures. Truly memorable."

"My mother was, unfortunately, a victim of a failed hospital discharge and was desperately in need of somewhere to rest and recuperate with appropriate care and attention. From my first telephone enquiry during which I spoke with a nurse and deputy care home manager, everyone was so empathetic, kind and helpful. They took Mum immediately and provided exemplary, respectful and excellent attention to her every need during her two-week stay. Everyone was amazing. I owe them so much for their kindness and care and would highly recommend Wykeham House."

"We are so pleased Mum is here, the staff have been wonderful to her and continue to help her with her issues. Now that new management have been brought in we feel it can only get even better. Only a couple of tiny issues: Smell - whilst this is much better it could be further enhanced by more deep cleaning and washing down of woodwork, nice smellies. If residents are in their rooms, there should always be a knock on the door first - this has not been consistent. We feel we can approach staff with any issues. Thank you."

"My mother has been a resident of Wykeham House since April 2017. She has been very happy there and well looked after. She had a problem recently that she felt strongly enough about to want to complain to the manager. The manager of the care home dealt with it kindly, especially as my mother was rather confused about what she told her. The issue was followed up and I was informed by telephone and email of the result. I was pleased with the sympathetic way the matter was handled and appreciate the sometimes difficult circumstances under which the staff work. The nursing and caring staff always seem to be cheerful and patient with the residents."

"When my mother first went into Wykeham House two and a half years ago she was given two weeks to a month to live as her weight was so low. With the care of the home, my mother put on weight and is still with us two and a half years on. The staff are very helpful and friendly, always ready to listen to what you have to say and take on board any concerns you may have. The home is always clean and I have never found mum unclean, she is bed bound and has never had a bed sore. It is a very caring home and I would definitely recommend it."

"Since the CQC report, much activity has taken place (for the better). Many changes have taken place on the management side. This brought many outside personnel walking about giving their views on what should be done; this has an upsetting mood on the residents, seeing them as strangers. The whole atmosphere changed, especially on the so called management side, no welcoming, smiling faces or greetings until the new manager came on the scene. The atmosphere changed all being with a smile and "Good morning" etc. The (I'm the boss) attitude over the past couple of months has gone, everyone is happy and talkative. The care and attention given to my wife is second to none, although she is sometimes difficult, they persevere with her and get a result. I cannot find any faults in the paperwork etc; all up to date. Much has been accomplished in the past few months. The new feature - 1st-floor memory lane (with garden feel) everyone speaks about as a good feature. Why? I took my wife out in front of the mural on the wall and mentioned the fact it is a nice scene, her reaction after a few moments was Richmond Park, it reactivated her memory of years ago spending time in Richmond Park. The place she recalled is now known as "Isabella Plantation". So, I'm just one of many people who are glad to see and hear that the garden feature is staying, and with the new manager in the chair, management is going in the right direction too."

"My Mum has been a resident at Wykeham House for just over a year. I can honestly say that the staff at Wykeham have made this very difficult time for our family bearable. They are so caring and patient. There has been a change in the management recently which has caused a few ripples with the staff but all seems to be settling. "My mother went into Wykeham House in February 2015, she had lost a lot of weight and was given just a few weeks to live. The food was excellent and Mum soon gained weight. Now two years on, Mum is still with us, she is bed bound and has vascular dementia. The staff are very caring and look after her really well. "An extremely well run and caring establishment. management very approachable and friendly. Many activities arranged on a weekly basis including an outing in the minibus once a week for most of the year. Staff always willing to chat whilst attending to my relative and still dealing with everything efficiently but with care and thoughtfulness. I have no worries about my relative being in this care home. She is safe, happy and very well cared for."

"On the whole carers work very hard to create a caring environment and genuinely seem to care for the residents. However, they are frequently under time pressure from under staffing and sickness absence. This means they they may not be able to spent sufficient time with individual residents, especially those who are not mobile, and who therefore can feel isolated. Individual carers are mostly good, occasionally do not respond to residents who are speaking to them. Training in communication skills has been organised to hopefully this will improve. Some carers go the extra mile, and relate to the residents, others do not really listen and laugh when they are speaking. Nursing is variable with failure to notice symptoms of infection and lack of knowledge of geriatric immune response (or lack of); one or two very good and sensitive, and listen to residents and family. There seems to be a fear of asking the GP, and are reactive rather than proactive with health issues unfortunately."

"It is now five years since my friend had her stroke and had to make Barchester Wykeham House her home- to begin with, she was quite bright but over the years appeared to have lost her spirit. Recent months have shown massive improvements, this I believe is due to good management, a great occupational therapist and improved care and observation. I have only marked care as satisfactory because in some cases this still needs improvement- but is improving."

"When I viewed Wykeham, I was told that there are a lot of activities for the residents. When my mother started, I discovered there wasn't much daily activity and one of the activity coordinators had one day as a carer which left no one to do activities, or if there were, very little by someone else. I felt there could have been more time listening to music rather than watching the telly. My mother is used to more interaction with people which I feel she isn't getting at Wykeham."

"Over the last 2 months we have noticed a great improvement in my mothers communication skills. Since having daily activities she hardly disturbs her room at all. She seems very content there after 16 months there. The staff are very respectful of their dignity and very kind. All staff are very approachable, if you have any queries."

"My cousin has been well cared for generally. Her hearing aids are often problematic - she says that when she is washed in the mornings the aids are frequently not removed, so often have water in the tubes or when they are removed they are done roughly and tubes have fallen out. We have had to take them to the hospital for repairs."

"First class service, a place I would hope to go to when my time comes. The care they give to my wife is friendly, my wife likes a joke and has fun. Of course she would be happy at home with me, but that's impossible. It would be nice to see her out of bed for the summer."

"In my mother's last few hours of life the staff were fantastic, so kind, the tea and biscuits really helped. We were really looked after, and mum was made as comfortable as possible, and pain-free. We thank the staff for their kindness and compassion."

"I am a resident/patient at Wykeham House. In that capacity, I have found the home to be excellent/good in an overall package - all teams, cleaners, carers, activities, nursing staff. The maintenance man is a very excellent person doing all the home at the moment alone."

"I have always found the care my Aunt has received in these last five years as very good. There has been much improvement in the last 2 years since the new manager has taken over such as facilities, training, new staff, decor, activities and a lot of care to all residents to make everyone feel at home. Residents families are given a lot of respect. My Aunt's younger brother died recently and I was entering hospital that week and too ill to visit. The staff were extremely helpful and caring to my grieving Aunt until I was able to visit a week or so later. This was much appreciated. My Aunt will be 100 soon."
