Activities at Lucerne House Care Home

At Lucerne House our person-centred activity programme has been tailored to suit the residents living in our home. It is constantly developing due to the direct feedback from our residents and enables them to take part in existing hobbies and new tasks that aim to stimulate creativity, intellect, physical ability and improve well being. With music groups, pub outings, cooking, gardening, one to one time, entertainers, quiz's, bingo and more, there is never a shortage of things to do.

We also have external providers who visit the home. We have Rachel Sherring who provides Yoga Sessions, Lorrain Christopher who is available every Wednesday and Thursday for hair appointments in our on site salon, Sharon Rees who visits on a Wednesday to provide massage therapy sessions in the comfort of your chair and regular Church Services which do include a monthly Holy Communion. We are always open to new suggestions, so if you do have any, our activities team will always be happy to listen.

Alex Petersen

Activities Coordinator

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to Head of Activities, and earned my NAPA level 2 qualification in Activity Provision.

In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.

My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Our New Weather Shelter

Residents, relatives and staff are all very pleased with the new weather shelter in our Memory Lane garden.

Chris Day & Alex Lovell, from our maintenance team, who are master carpenters, along with our Gardener, Seb Pope, have put a great deal of effort into the garden area with new flower beds and sensory items that surround the expertly built shelter. It has been put to good use over the summer and is a great addition to our home.

Thank you to all three for their excellent work and craftsmanship.

Reconnect with Geoff Greeen

Residents have really enjoyed taking part in the reconnect activity provided by Geoff Green. Residents have been testing their music knowledge, singing, conducting and interacting with musical instruments. Geoff always brings a great energy to his sessions, which everyone can feed off.

Tea Party

Tea Party

Residents, relatives and staff had a fantastic time at Lucerne House on Friday 18th August at their now famous tea party. Everyone in the home was invited to our Memory Lane lounge to enjoy sweet treats and music provided by Head of Activities, Alex Petersen, on his guitar.

Lucerne House on Phonic FM

Lucerne House on Phonic FM

On Saturday 28th July, Diane Horne (RMN) and Hailei Petersen (Care Practitioner), from our Memory Lane community, were delighted to join Gina Awad on her radio show on Phonic FM. The show was all about dementia and Diane and Hailei were able to share some of the excellent practices at Lucerne House.

Gina has been doing excellent work in Exeter over the past years to improve the quality of life for those living with dementia, and was recognised for this in 2016 at the Dementia Friendly Awards.

We are very proud of Dianne and Hailei and extremely grateful to Gina for having them as guests on her show.

We are now 10-60-06 accredited!

We are now 10-60-06 accredited!

Congratulations to all the staff on our Memory Lane community for their recent 10.60.06 accreditation. Lalaine Limos and Scott Foot (pictured) attended a ceremony on Thursday 20th July to receive their certificate and 10.60.06 award on behalf of the Memory Lane team.

10.60.06 is a training and accreditation programme designed to enhance the dementia care environment and improve interactions between staff and residents living with dementia, relatives and health professionals. It pro-actively works towards reducing distress, increasing well-being and improving quality of life.

A good deed for man's best friend

A good deed for man's best friend

Back in April, we were approached by Lyn Gulliver from the community in Alphington, asking for donations of blankets for the Hope for Podencos charity. The charity's aim is to raise awareness and help Podencos living in Spain. Lyn recently delivered a thank you card to Lucerne, which is posted on the notice board in reception.

If you have any old blankets at home that you no longer have any use for, then please do bring them to Lucerne House and hand them to Alex, Marilyn (pictured), Scott, Jan or Beth, who will forward them to Lyn and the charity.
