Activities at Cumberland Grange Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Gosia Maliga

Activities Coordinator

I have been in the care sector since 2008, and I also have a degree in teaching. I am here to arrange and run a varied range of activities for our residents to take part in, keep them entertained and enrich their lives. From flower arranging, quizzes, arts and crafts to movies in the cinema, I try to make sure there is something for everyone here to take part in, and tailor events to suit each resident.

Cumberland Grange supports local charity event for Alzheimer's Society

Barchester’s Cumberland Grange Care Home in Exeter, got in the Christmas spirit yesterday by sending Hugh Dickinson their Homes Services Advisor along to deliver a donation of some delicious cupcakes prepared by Chef, John Holman for a charity Christmas light switch on in Ottery St Mary.

Cumberland Grange, love getting involved with the local community and supporting charity events. Having a specialist unit for residents with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, we were very happy to have the opportunity to help raise funds for such an important cause.

Lighting up time got a whole new meaning at Abbott Close as Mr & Mrs Harris, with the help of Dom Boull from D&M’s Disco, Wedding & Party Specialist went all out this year to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The community came together to see the Christmas lights switched on while enjoying hot chocolate and Cumberland’s cakes being served by the Harris family to help raise funds and keep everyone warm on the chilly winter evening.

The event was a great success raising over £300 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Dom from D&M’s Disco played Christmas Music and gave a countdown to the crowd while a snow machine filled the street making it feel very festive.  Hugh also handed out some goodie bags to the crowd making it really feel like Christmas.

Garden Centre Trip

Another successful trip today for some of our residents. We had planned a trip to Exeter Quay but sadly the rain came in just as we were about to set off. So we took a trip to Bernaville Nurseries where our ladies enjoyed tea and cake.

Then they selected some orchids for their rooms and bird seed to encourage birds to our beautiful gardens at Cumberland grange.

Musical Time

This week at Cumberland Grange our residents enjoyed some music from Tim.

"The Musial Gentleman"

Everyone enjoyed singing along with him in our lovely lounge.

Opening of Cumberland Grange

Today we celebrated the official opening of Cumberland Grange!

Eileen and Dennis our first residents this week were joined by Veronica Gosling who cut the ribbon!

Veronica has an Art Studio in Exeter called Studio 36 and came to Cumberland today with a collection of pottery, sculptures and artwork for the residents to enjoy. She also had a 1-1 art lesson with Dennis!

Veronica partners with Age UK and host’s a budding friends group where she supports people with dementia by hosting painting sessions at her studio with the motto ‘we don’t need language, we don’t need memory’.

Thank you Veronica, Dennis and Eileen

Resident of the Day

Eileen's day!

Eileen has travelled extensively, one of her favorite places to visit was Romania. So we had some treats delivered from Romania for her to share with the other residents.

Eileen's favorite meal is a roast dinner! Roast beef was on the menu yesterday and her family joined her.

Eileen has a passion for classical music! In the evening after dinner we were joined by flute trio called Flute Cake who performed a mixture of tunes from well know classics through to show tunes such as South Pacific and My Fair Lady. They even performed some Folk and Jazz!

Eileen and the other residents had a wonderful day!
