What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"My friend became a resident in October 2023. He has been happy, content and so well looked after. Every member of staff has been outstanding in their care and friendliness."

"Staff have been incredibly supportive and I feel that my mother has received excellent care. I have felt confident and reassured that she is in good hands which makes it easier for me during the periods of time I cannot get to visit her. The care provided seems to be tailored to my mum's needs. All of the staff I have met have been kind, caring and professional."

"The staff at Newlands looked after our mam for 14 months before she died at the end of May. She had vascular dementia and a very nasty cancerous wound on her leg. This eventually resulted in her being bed-bound, and totally reliant on the staff for every aspect of her daily living. Mam was cared for so well, and treated with kindness, humour and compassion, even though at times, she could be noisy and demanding. Visiting was stressful and heartbreaking at times, as she often didn't know who we were. I would always feel comforted when I left her that she wasn't alone, and the staff would be in to see her whenever they could. I was contacted regularly if there were any new concerns. Newlands wasn't perfect, but they all did a great job under difficult circumstances. All the staff from the manager to the household cleaners, laundry and kitchen staff and the maintenance men, worked really hard, and I appreciate everything they did to make Mam's life more tolerable and comfortable."

"With the condition of Progressive supranuclear palsy, my wife was unable to receive the special care she needed in her home town. We brought her here where the staff treat her with the utmost tenderness and dignity and looked in on her frequently to enquire about her requirements. Her dietary needs were met with food and drink, which I couldn't cater for as her full-time carer. Unfortunately, she came to Newlands Care Home in the later stages of her condition and sadly only lived 23 days despite this I am full of admiration for how the manager and staff were able to provide the comfort she needed in her final days."

"Although my mam has only been at Newlands Care Home for twelve days, I am very happy with the way she has settled in. The manager and receptionists are very friendly, helpful and welcoming. All the care team members seem very nice and helpful and show genuine care towards my mam. I'm no expert but from what I have seen, the staff are looking after my mam very well. My mam looks clean and comfortable, it's pleasing to know shes doing well at Newlands Care Home."

"My mother was cared for in the Lonsdale Unit at Barchester Newlands Care Home during the Covid outbreak. Obviously, activities were restricted and there must have been severe staffing pressures, nevertheless, kindness and professional care were always displayed. Great effort was made to enable visits and I was always updated on any changes in my mother's condition."

"I have only been visiting the home for the past six weeks, in this time I have observed that it appears to be a very well run home with a pleasant atmosphere. Much care and consideration has been given to my wife. I have found all staff members regardless of their position to be extremely pleasant and polite."

"Staff are very helpful and give good care, it is a shame that the industry is severely understaffed and this reflects of the service they can give with regards to days out or trips and more time for 1-1. I applaud Newlands staff for giving their all. Just wish they could have nicer furniture in the lounge as guests can use this now but ut is happy and very uncomfortable."

"Amazing care from all the staff. They have looked after my friend for over a year now and I have nothing but praise for how they all work and care for her. Communication with me and dealing with these difficult times (Covid) have been brilliant. Everything they have in place to keep people safe is brilliant too. Well done and thank you. The management team are exceptional. Please thank all the staff."

"When accomodating visits when restrictions were lifting during Covid, members of staff were very helpful in helping us to organise visits. During an outbreak where my dad tested positive, they were very helpful in helping and putting up with our constant calls."

"My dad has Lewy Body Dementia and is blind and has been in Lakeland Unit for over 2 years - the carers and nurses are brilliant - they know how to look after him well and some of them have become the second family! They are the professional experts who provide the 24-hour care dad needs - he is very well looked after."

"I would like to express my thanks to all staff at Newlands Care Centre for the care they gave to my dad during his recent stay with them. I found all the staff, managers, care assistants and on-call nurses were very helpful, courteous and polite. During any contact I had with the home, I always got a full overview of my dad's health and physical condition from them. The care assistants were all happy to talk to me, and give an insight to how my dad was settling in, and how happy he seemed to be with them in there, and how he was responding and interacted with them, which was a joy to hear. Whenever I spoke to the on-duty nurses, they always gave an honest report on my dad's condition. This was very reassuring, knowing there was always a nurse on duty, and that fully professional help was always on hand. I can only say that I don’t think I would have found a better place for my dad to be cared for than Newlands. Thank you."

"The staff at Newlands have been remarkable. The care my husband has received has been outstanding, especially over the past five months during the pandemic. Nothing has been too much trouble keeping us updated and informed at all times."

"My relative is in Lakeland Unit, which is for the most challenging dementia residents. We were impressed by how quiet and calm it is. The room is large, bright and airy and overlooks the garden. When I visited him a few days after his arrival, I was surprised by how clean and happy he was. He had settled in right away and had made himself at home. We witnessed staff interaction with him and other residents and they are proactive and have happy banter with the residents to get jobs done (that need to be done i.e. getting the resident changed). We went to an evening meeting (cheese and wine), the General Manager explained the upcoming events and was open to suggestions to enrich the well being of the residents. Her ethos is that this is their (the residents) home and she likes it to be homely. She chatted to all the family members of residents and is very knowledgeable of all the residents and has said we can phone at any time if we have a query. We think it has a lovely atmosphere."

"The staff on Lakeland unit are exemplary. They make a totally challenging and demanding job look effortless. They treat my 89-year-old blind, Lewy Dementia dad with total respect, dignity and care. He couldn't be in a better place. Each member of the staff is wonderful. They have relived my stress, I know he is 100% looked after and cared for and they brighten my day totally. They are like my second family and they certainly cheer me up when I'm feeling down about him."

"My husband is well cared for by a dedicated team. They have many challenges on a day to day basis, which sometimes is because staffing is low, usually due to illness, which nobody can foresee."

"Each and every one of the staff on the Lakeland Unit, are worth their weight in gold. My dad is 89, blind and diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. He was removed from his home, sectioned and came to unit from a treatment centre. He is so well looked after with dignity, warmth, care and humour - the staff for me are a blessing to him, mum and me. I can walk away from the unit after a daily visit knowing he is in the best hands possible and the staff are so good with him, mum and me. They have brightened my day's up and cheered me up on a daily basis. I can't single anyone out because they all make a totally challenging and demanding job look effortless!"

"Things have been going down in the last year but hopefully, things will pick up soon as there are a few changes in the look in the past month. Food needs a lot of attention. Even though people don't know what they are eating and don't complain, it's not fair that the food is often cold and I think this should change."

"My husband had been transferred from hospital to Newlands Care Centre at Workington after a long illness, but unfortunately, he was only there about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks before passing away. From the first day to the last, he could not have been better looked after anywhere. The staff, from handyman (who couldn't do enough for us) to cleaners and all nursing staff and clerical. It certainly helped and when he was at the end of his life, my sons and I were cared for sympathetically."

"Made to feel at home as soon as we walked in, could not ask for better. We loved the way the staff were with residents. We go every day and it's so lovely. They respect every resident. When we walk out we know our brother is in safe hands. He has settled well and smiles at all the staff when they make a fuss of him. 100% staff."

"My husband went into care in October 2016 after it became apparent I could no longer care for him at home. He was accepted into Newlands in April this year after being in four different places. If you can be happy/content when suffering from dementia then my husband is. Now he is settled in Newlands, the relief my family and I feel now he is in such a caring environment is immense."

"We have found this home to be full of kind, caring professionals who go the extra mile for their residents. It is clean, well kept and up to date. Residents are encouraged to 'personalise' their accommodation with their own things and to help them feel safe and secure. Nursing care is excellent. It has a happy feel to it and activities are provided for residents on a regular basis. Food is fresh, nutritious and cooked on site - with special requests catered for whenever possible. As they say - 'If a well-known brand did CareHomes...'"

"My wife has been in Newlands since December 2017. She has always been treated with kindness and professionalism. Staff work extremely hard under, very often, difficult conditions. I have only ever seen residents treated with respect."

"In increasingly difficult times in elderly social care, I have nothing but praise for this Barchester Home at Newlands Park, Workington. The dedicated team of nurses and carers have treated my mother (dementia patient) with gentle compassion while affording her the dignity, her 84 years requires. The EMI ward is light and airy with access to enclosed gardens (safe and pleasant). There are varied activities on a group and individual levels and a mini-bus for excursions. Excellent, approachable management."

"My dad has been in the Lakeland Unit in the Newlands Care Centre for 2 years now as we were unable to care for him at home any longer. His condition has deteriorated throughout his stay and staff have really adapted to his needs. Staff and management are quick to address any of our concerns and do everything they can to maintain my dad's safety, dignity and well-being. Unfortunately, it is a very difficult job and at times, it is noted more staff are required as they simply cannot keep up. Extra safety equipment would be most helpful eg. up to date hoist - wheelchairs - bed monitor equipment and CCTV: as staff can't be everywhere at once and need to be able to see all the residents at all times to enable them to keep everyone, including themselves, safe. More recliner chairs are needed and perhaps a few extra hours worked by domestics because the toilet facilities and dining area are constantly being messed up by the residents. Please note - the staff are very hard working and caring and I could easily name at least 8 members of staff that I would grade as exceptional on the Lakeland Unit - unfortunately they are overworked and underpaid and will be forced to look elsewhere if improvements to help them are not made. Without your loyal caring staff on the Lakeland Unit, I am sorry to say the facilities and the overall standard would be very very poor. The staff are what is keeping it going - so treat them as well as they are treating my dad. Many thanks."

"Mother, now a centenarian, who had lived independently until 98, found the initial transition from independence to being part of a cared for environment a shock. However, the staff's attitude to her, made her realise that it was a sensible decision and move, at her then 98 years of age. We as a family have no doubts that our choice of home was correct nearly 3 years ago and remains so today. The choices in the boxes below indicate our judgement of Newlands. Having not had Mother in any other such home we cannot judge against other establishments but can draw from the experience of occasional visits to other homes over the years. Good selection indicates what we would like to achieve if she was with us, the excellent selections to reflect our views on Newlands. Family and friends who occasionally travel to visit Mother all remark on the excellence of the staff and cleanliness. Value, a motive subject for any family which has to pay, government policy dictates."

"The care in this home is outstanding. The residents are given more than expected; support respecting their dignity and nothing is too much for any of the staff, no matter what their role. All residents are treated with respect and everyone goes out of their way to make the families visiting feel welcome. We are kept well informed of any incidents, updated monthly on reports and changes in every aspect of care. The staff ring and explain any new items that might appear in a report so the family are prepared before it is written and sent out. The family is excellent and valued by us all."

"I find the care excellent most of the time, but we all know that sometimes staff levels are inadequate through no fault of the home. Also, the quality of some of the food has changed and not for the better. The staff show compassion and total care that go above and beyond normal circumstances and also keep the spirit of lightness and fun, which is os important."
