Govt moves step closer to rolling out personal care budgets

A final evaluation of personal care budgets will take place in October, bringing the government one step closer to realising their plans of rolling out the scheme to those with conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease.

This is based on an existing policy for older adults, which allows them to allocate their own social care spending.

After a three-year pilot scheme, involving over 60 primary care trusts, £1.5 million has now been set aside for rolling out personal care budgets nationwide.

Norman Lamb, care and support minster, said: "We want to ensure more care is tailored around people's individual needs and preferences," adding that personal care budgets will allow those with "complex health needs" to choose their own care plan.

The scheme will also give "doctors the flexibility to try innovative new approaches to achieve better health outcomes". This is hoped to bring a significant improvement in the health outcomes of patients across the country.
