Activities at Wheatlands Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Life at Wheatlands Care Home

Nutrition and Hydration Week

To celebrate Nutrition and Hydration week, our residents enjoyed lots of delicious and tasty treats and snacks ranging from Crudités and dips to water infused with cucumber and mint to increase hydration.

A highlight of the week was fresh fruit kebabs made by Jan one of our residents here at Wheatlands. Once she had assembled them she then served them to all our residents and staff. She enjoyed a chat with each and every person as she handed them out.

Jan said it reminded her of when she worked in a pub when she was younger and really enjoyed her day socialising.

Fun in the Snow

We certainly didn’t let the snow stop us having fun! In fact, there were smiles all round! We spent the days drinking hot chocolates with baileys topped with whipped cream whilst reminiscing of snow days, particularly the big freeze of 1963 which lasted months. Some residents even braved the cold for a walk in the snow. There is nothing quite like being the first person to crunch through the fresh snow! We even had a snow ball fight. Jan said she hadn't laughed so much for years.

Una's Beautiful Watercolour Paintings

When Una came to live at Wheatlands, we sat down for a coffee to get to know her a little better and discovered one of her passions was art and particularly water colour painting, be it still art or copying a picture. We ensured we had the right materials so she could pursue her passion; she now paints at least once a week. Person centred care is at the forefront of what we do here at Wheatlands and we will do everything in our power for our residents to continue to pursue their hobbies and interests.

Tin Can Alley

One to one time with our residents is of the utmost importance. Staff from all departments always take time out of their busy days to engage and talk to residents over a nice cuppa or game. Here’s Lynda our Head Housekeeper enjoying a game of Tin Can Alley with Pet one of our lovely residents. They spent their time laughing and reminiscing about yesteryears when such a game would be a the local summer fete or trying to win a goldfish at the seaside.

Weekly Walking Club

Our residents like to get out where ever possible and get some fresh air. After one residents suggested going for a walk before breakfast we decided to start our new weekly early morning walking club on a Tuesday. The group has proven a great success and we have been out in all weather in the past month fog, icy and we even enjoyed some winter sunshine. Living in Much Wenlock we are very lucky to be surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside so be it a long or a short walk it never gets boring. If we are lucky we will come across some wildlife we often see pheasants and birds of prey. It’s important to our residents to have that connection with the outside world and maintain hobbies and interests of theirs.

Pimp My Zimmer

Our new project here at Wheatlands is ‘Pimp my Zimmer’ it’s a fabulous way of spending some quality one to one time with our residents whist helping them decorate their otherwise dull and boring Zimmer frames. Not only do the designs brighten up everyone’s day and give the residents more individuality by personalising them so they can easily identify their frame but it is also proven to reduce falls.
