New drug target 'may help treat diabetes'

Researchers have identified a new target which could be used to treat type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, often seen in older people using assisted living.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that the mitochondria of cells is decreased in the skeletal muscle of those with diabetes.

This discovery could lead to the development of medications which would boost the activity of the enzyme in an effort to fight the disease.

It is believed that the enzyme, known as Sirt3, may contribute to the development of insulin resistance.

Senior author C Ronald Kahn said: "Many studies have shown that the mitochondria don't work well in those with diabetes. This points to a cause of why they don't work well."

Meanwhile, a University of Alberta study revealed that diabetes-fighting drug metformin and exercise may not work well together to lower blood sugar in those with the condition.

While both successfully reduce blood sugar when used separately, the study found that when combined they could trigger a counter regulatory response.
