Claire Gibson from the Briardene Unit at South View in Billingham has been awarded 'Activities Coordinator of the Year' at the Barchester Care Awards 2017.
The award Claire won celebrates the vital role that Activities Coordinators play in Barchester homes, bringing joy, friendship, and meaning to people's everyday lives as well as helping people maintain their independence, build up their self-confidence, reconnect with the wider community and reminisce about their most precious memories.
The judges said: ''When I first met Claire, she said something very poignant to me, she said 'Activities is life.' And I think she has hit the nail on the head. What amazed me about Claire is her proactive attitude and total commitment to the job. She is always researching different approaches and looking for new ways to engage individuals living with complex dementia, like the introducion of iPads in the home - which has helped achieve a 70% reduction in falls. She has an extremely person-centred approach with each of her residents needs to enhance their lives. As an example, she has developed a method of communicating with a resident that can't speak and can now gauge his mood more easily as a result.''
