Kevin Smith, Head Chef at Briardene Suite, which is part of South View Care Centre in Billingham has been awarded ‘Chef of the Year’ at the Barchester Care Awards 2016.
To compete for the top prize, not only did Kevin have to battle against four other chefs in a cook-off competition but he also had to organise a community event in the summer to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
The judges were impressed by Kevin’s performance in both stages of the competition and commented that he was a talented chef with a caring heart, who makes a huge difference to the lives of others through his work at Briardene Suite.
June Hoggart, General Manager at Briardene South View Care Centre said: “We are all so proud of Kevin. He really deserves this award because he not only had to put on a huge Queens celebration birthday party in the Home which was a huge success attended by families and friends, the theme was around the world in 90 years celebrating foods from around the world in relation to the Queen’s age. Kevin is an important team member who has an impact on the residents well being day to day. His menus reflect each resident’s needs through nutritional factors and personal choice to enhance there physical and mental health well being, making each mealtime a positive experience for those living at Briardene South View.''
On receiving the award, Kevin said: "It’s an honour and a privilege to represent the South View site in this competition my last Job was a chef in the Army and this was a completely different career change for me and one that I have embraced and developed new skills because of this."
