Stroke 'hinders quality of life' in women more than men

Having a stroke harms quality of life more for women than it does for men, according to a recent study.

Researchers claim that even having a mini stroke can have a more profound effect on females.

The discovery was made when a team of Swedish investigators from Danderyd Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden analysed the generic quality of life of 379 stroke patients and 117 people that had experienced a mini stroke, known as a transient ischemic attack.

Dr Asa Franzen-Dahlin, co author of the study, commented: "Physical problems are easy to identify, but personality changes and cognitive decline – a reduction in the ability to think, concentrate, formulate ideas, reason and remember – are often only noticeable to those closest to the patient."

Therefore, it is important those at risk of diminished quality of life are identified. This means they will be able to receive vital support and care to help them function better on a day-to-day basis.
