Music and drama 'benefits Parkinson's patients'

Partaking in music and drama activities can be highly beneficial to individuals with Parkinson's disease, according to medical professionals.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center in the US offers the Creative Arts for Parkinson's programme - a music and drama therapy scheme specifically for those with the neurodegenerative condition.

Participants are asked to delve into their emotions and stretch themselves physically to benefit from the sessions, which tackle both the physical symptoms of Parkinson's disease and the psychological burden it can have on people.

Tanya Simuni, a neurologist at the hospital, explained: "Patient care is much more than just medical; it's caring for the whole person.

"By providing music and drama therapy, we are hoping to help these patients find new means of fulfillment in their lives while also addressing some of the physical components of their illness."

In other news, a study published in journal Nature Neuroscience looks set to further the development of novel treatments and therapies to help people with Parkinson's disease.
