Muscle endurance tests detect MS abnormalities

Abnormalities in the early stages of multiple sclerosis (MS) could be identified through muscle endurance tests, according to a recent study.

Researchers at the University of Tel Aviv believe that they have found a way to enable doctors to intervene at an earlier juncture in cases of MS, which significantly improves symptoms.

Muscle endurance tests could be key to identifying the point at which lower limb muscles begin to deteriorate.

This is difficult to identify during standard neurological testing, specifically at an early juncture.

Dr Alon Kalron and his team of researchers found that patients in the early stages of MS have 40 per cent less muscle endurance than their healthy counterparts.

With advances such as that made by Dr Kalron, it is expected that MS will soon become a controlled disease - the success of which depending on early identification and effective treatment.

At the 10th International Congress of Neuroimmunology of the International Society of Neuroimmunology scientists asserted that MS could soon receive the same status as HIV/AIDS in terms of its manageability.
