UK second best for Alzheimer's research

Alzheimer's disease is a growing problem in the UK, as a result of its ageing population. World class research is key to combating the condition and luckily Britain is well placed to meet the challenge.

According to a review by Alzheimer's research UK, Alzheimer's research in Britain is only bested by the United States, the Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters reported.

This is despite only a small number of scientists working in the field, compared to other nations.

According to the study, the success of the UK in Alzheimer's research can be improved further by increasing the number of workers in the field.

A spokesperson from the Alzheimer's Society commented: "Research into dementia is crucial to finding a cure and helping people live well.

"We know that UK dementia researchers punch far above their weight, with some of the best and most dedicated scientists in this field."

However, they stress that despite its high performance, Alzheimer's research is dramatically underfunded.
