The social care sector in England is worth around £43 billion to the economy, research from Skills for Care suggests.

The study looked at the size of the care sector in England and the impact it has both socially and economically.

It found that the sector currently supports almost three million full-time jobs and makes up 6.4 per cent of the total workforce in England.

"A total economic value of £43 billion makes social care one of the key economic drivers in communities across the country," said Sharon Allen, chief executive officer for Skills for Care.

She added the figure is expected to rise sharply in the future as an ageing population means that more people will soon be in need of specialist care and support.

The study also highlighted the fact that a number of other industries are dependent on the care sector. This included businesses which supply food to care homes through to construction firms.
