Shielding lotions could emerge as the perfectly safe answer for those who are eager to look younger without risking their health, it has been claimed.
Demand for plastic surgery is strong, with figures from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery showing that the number of facelifts performed in the US in 2004 was up 25 percent, to over 157,000.
However, American firm 21st Century formulations, which itself manufactures the shielding lotion Skin MD Natural, says that such lotions can offer consumers the same younger look provided by plastic surgery, but without any of the risks posed by such procedures.
Dr. Peter Helton, a dermatologist at the Helton Skin & Laser Institute in California, commented: "I'm not a big fan of plastic surgery. You are guaranteed to look different, but you are not necessarily guaranteed to look better.
"With a shielding lotion you prevent the dehydration that ages skin. We use far too many products that strip the protective layer off the skin and this can lead to deterioration of the skin’s condition."
He added that our skin is not designed to counter the effects on the thousands of chemical it comes into contact with, and that is why shielding lotions can prove important.
Shielding lotions work by both protecting the skin and locks in the natural oils and moisture, and can counter the effects of ageing not just on the face, but also on hands, neck and body too.
