Santander to raise £450,000 for Alzheimer's

Santander has pledged to raise £450,000 for the Alzheimer's Society in 2011 to help those with dementia and their carers.

The bank is to carry out national and regional fundraising initiatives during the year to raise money for the charity's online forum Talking Point, which provides advice, support and information to those affected by the condition.

Fundraising events will include a sponsored abseil in Liverpool and Milton Keynes, the Pedometer Challenge which will see staff being sponsored to walk long distances and a sponsored climb of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Sheralee Morris, Santander Community Relations Manager said: "The support of companies like Santander allows us to champion the rights of people living with dementia and the millions of people who care for them. The money raised will make a real difference to the 750,000 people living with dementia in the UK."

This comes after a study was published in journal Nature Neuroscience that claimed scientists had managed to isolate proteins in the brain which could lead to revolutionary new treatments for around 130 brain conditions.
