Relax when getting a hearing aid fitted for the first time

Relax when getting a hearing aid fitted for the first time

As people get older, their hearing may deteriorate and need to have a hearing aid installed. This can be a daunting prospect, but it is important to relax.

Gemma Twitchen, audiology specialist at Action on Hearing Loss, explained that during the fitting an audiologist will talk patients through what to expect from the hearing aid. This could be anything from common things that go wrong technologically or what things will sound like with the aid.

Audiologists will also give tips on how to get the most from the device, illustrating how to use the controls and insert the aid into the ear.

"You should be given written instructions and a contact number in case you have any questions. The audiologist will also arrange a follow up interview to see how you are getting on with your hearing aid," Ms Twitchen said.

She added that it is advisable to bring along a friend for support and to ensure there is another person who understands what to expect.
