Queen's Speech disappoints over-50s
10th May 2012

Many over-50s were disappointed yesterday (May 9th) by the Queen's Speech, which failed to announce a full bill for the reform of the social care system.

Organisations that promote the rights of older adults have been campaigning for the government to address the "crumbling" care system in the UK for some time, but yesterday the Queen announced that only a draft bill will be published on the matter.

Michelle Mitchell, charity director of Age UK, commented: "'A draft Bill on social care is some progress but a full Bill would have been so much better.

"As it is, this means no legislation for at least a year."

Consequently, the care system will be without vital funding and change until 2013. This is problematic as the country's population continues to age.

However, Age UK claims that it is willing to work with the government on the reforms to ensure that they are just right when they are introduced.
