Public urged to celebrate older people's day
25th September 2008

A leading charity has called for a celebration of the upcoming Older People's Day.

The Alzheimer's Society has suggested people can organise their own local activities to mark the event, which takes place on October 1st.

With the aim of challenging outdated stereotypes, this year's event goes under the banner of Full of Life.

The charity said: "The day raises awareness that older age, with all its challenges, is just as fulfilling and exciting as being young."

It added that this year's Older People's Day is all about bringing people of different age groups together in order to "strengthen neighbourhoods and create better understanding".

Meanwhile, the Alzheimer's Society has warmly welcomed the outcome of a vote from staff of accounting giant KPMG, who have chosen the charity as the focus of a range of fundraising activities over the next two years.

The charity said that the partnership could result in over £750,000 being raised in support of its work.
