PIP breast implant data revealed by government

New data relating to PIP breast implants has been revealed by the UK's government.

The Department of Health released figures for the period January 6th to September 30th, showing a total of 7,787 referrals have now been received.

Some 121 trusts are now handling PIP breast implant referrals, with 5,146 scans having already been completed and the number of decisions to explant now stands at 607.

It was claimed by the government that the latest estimate of the number of women with NHS PIP implants in place on January 6th is 970 and 964 of the women have been contacted.

Of these, 378 decisions have been made to explant, while 275 explants have already taken place and 148 scans have been completed.

"The point at which the NHS offer is completed will vary according to the circumstances of each woman," it was noted by the government.

Data from the NHS suggests 95 per cent of the PIP breast implants were provided privately for purely cosmetic reasons.
