Palliative care and cancer unit receive European award

4th November 2005

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) has accredited the Cancer Centre of the King Edward VII Hospital in Midhurst as the only designated centre in integrated oncology and palliative care in England.

The centre, that includes the Macmillan Palliative Care Unit, is now placed alongside just 15 other units across Europe.

Paul Duhig hospital manager said: "This is a significant achievement for the cancer services at King Edward VII Hospital recognising the effective work being undertaken by the hospital Oncology Services and the Macmillian Pallative Care Unit."

The centre offers a wide range of treatment and care for people from Sussex to Surrey and Hampshire. It provides chemotherapy, radiotherapy, counselling and complementary therapies. There are also pain management staff at hand.

The Macmillian Pallative Care Unit has twelve beds for specialist care including pain and symptom control, rehabilitation, and respite or terminal care.

The hospital was given the award at a ceremony on Tuesday in Paris.
