Over-70s are being encouraged to take part in competitive sport following two weeks of Olympic successes.
The Active Ageing Congress conference held in Glasgow this week is set to highlight the benefits of regular exercise for older adults.
It will stress that failing to take part in sport leads to frailty, but engaging in competitive activities will help to build up core strength and balance.
Dawn Skelton, professor of ageing and health at Glasgow Caledonian University, commented: "If you are not fit, you cannot maintain an independent and active lifestyle. For example, if you are not fit and you fall, you cannot get up again whereas if you are active, you can."
Currently, it is estimated that only seven per cent of older adults are getting their recommended 30 minutes of exercise each day.
It is important that this figure is changed and entertaining, fun activities will be key in getting over 70s onto their feet and motivated.
