Organ donors just short of target

9th September 2005

Just over 50,000 more organ donors are needed for the NHS to reach its goal of adding one million new registrations this year.

With less than one month of the 10th Anniversary NHS Organ Donor Register challenge left, UK Transplant is urging anyone who hasn't yet registered to do it now.

Maxine Walter spokesperson for NHS UK Transplant told Medical News Today: "The response so far has been wonderful and underlines the huge support that exists for organ donation in the UK.

"Thanks are due to everyone who's taken the time to sign up. We're now counting on just over 50,000 more people to help us make it a million!"

So far this year 2,529 people have had their lives changed by an organ transplant and 2,194 patients have regained their sight after having a cornea transplant.

Anyone who has an organ donor card is also encouraged to sign-up, as the register is a more definite way of securing their wishes.
