Older people should receive free financial advice

5th June 2006

The government should provide a number of free financial services to aid pensioners in helping them to decide whether to sell their homes.

Research from the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr) claims that a telephone service is the best was to help pensioners decide whether it is in their interests to trade down and move to a smaller property or into a home.

Figures reveal that there are approximately one million asset-rich, income-poor pensioners in the UK who own more than £100,000 worth of housing.

The ippr believes that the government could even help old people deal with the stress of selling their property and moving out.

"This isn't about forcing people to sell their homes but about empowering them to make informed choices which are right for them," Jim Bennett, ippr's head of social policy concluded.
