NHS reveals plans for winter

Health minister Jeremy Hunt has announced how the NHS is preparing for winter.

A flu vaccination advertising campaign will be launched by the Department of Health to raise awareness of the benefits for older adults of having the shot.

It was noted by the government that thousands of extra deaths in the winter each year as a result of cold weather and associated health problems.

"As winter approaches, we should all be on our guard against health problems - by taking simple steps and looking after our older friends and family we can keep warm and well," said Mr Hunt.

He added older adults and those with respiratory illnesses are particularly at risk during the colder months of the year.

Director of immunisation David Salisbury stated people are 11 times more likely to die from flu if you are pregnant or have a serious health condition.

Although flu can be caught all year round, it is especially common in winter and older adults are most at risk from the condition.
