Scientists have developed a new process to study the brain, providing the potential for the improved treatment of Huntington's disease.
The neurodegenerative disorder is progressive and fatal, but no cure has yet been found.
However, a study published in the Molecular Brain journal, found that cells from patients with HD displayed vacuolation.
This means that there is a small cavity in the cytoplasm of the cell, which has previously been noted in patients with the illness.
The discovery was made using a new research method that the scientists involve claim could help with further investigations into the causes of Huntington's disease.
It could also provide a useful biomarker as they are unique to the disease.
"Our studies pave the way for future mechanistic investigations using human induced pluripotent stem cells to model HD and for high-throughput therapeutic screens," the scientists claimed in the report.
