'New Barchester home for Hampshire'

2nd March 2007

Barchester Healthcare is due to set up a new home at a former hotel in Hampshire, according to the local press.

Over 60 beds will be provided in the renovated Rothsay Hotel after the scheme was approved by the Test Valley Borough Council northern area planning committee, reports the Hampshire News.

Located on the A342 Weyhill Road at Penton Mewsey, the former hotel was used as a hostel for builders working on the Newbury by-pass in the mid-1990s, but has been empty since.

Other care homes have had their applications rejected, but the newspaper reports that Barchester was granted permission for a nursing home - including a 58-space car park - in October 2003.

Councillor Ian Carr told the newspaper: "I'm staggered this site hasn't been developed before."

Other Barchester homes in Hampshire include Ashcombe House and St Thomas' Care Home in Basingstoke and Challoner House in Eastleigh.
