MPs vote through mental health (discrimination) bill

A bill that will put an end to certain aspects of discrimination faced by those with mental health issues has been voted through to the Committee stage

The mental health (discrimination) bill will remove the archaic law that prevents those with problems such as depression from participating in jury service, becoming or remaining a company director, or being as MP.

Charity Mind has welcomed that news, labelling a "momentous" move for the country.

Paul Farmer, chief executive officer of Mind, commented: "We are shattering the glass ceiling that has for so long existed in mental health and prevented people from playing an active role in society."

He added that by abolishing the old law, Parliament, the legal system and companies will be more representative of the general population.

Many people will experience mental health problems at some point in their life and often fail to seek help as a result of the stigma they face by coming clean.

The new bill could prove to be a vital step in removing this discrimination and prejudice, encouraging more patients to seek support.
