MPs 'must do more' to tackle elderly fuel poverty

MPs must take more action to tackle the "devastating effects" of winter fuel poverty, according to Age UK.

The charity has called for MPs to sign up to its Winter Pledge, committing them to do more to tackle the problem among constituents, particularly the elderly.

Michelle Mitchell, charity director, points to the UK's dreadful record on winter deaths, claiming it points to "deep-seated social issues".

"We are writing to every MP asking them to sign our pledge to reduce the number of excess winter deaths and help stop the devastating effects of fuel poverty," she added.

The pledge includes commitments to raise awareness of the health implications of cold homes during winter, in addition to lobbying energy providers to offer simpler tariffs that make it easier for people to lower their bills.

Humanitarian organisation Kindness UK has called on every community to do something to help vulnerable and isolated people in their area feel more involved this Christmas.

Founder David Jamilly said action was particularly important this year, with so many people struggling financially.
