Menstrual and umbilical stem cells to treat Alzheimer's and stroke?

Stem cells derived from human umbilical cord blood cells (hUCBs) and menstrual blood cells (MenSCs) could provide new therapies for those with conditions such as Alzheimer's and stroke.

Research published in Cell Transplantation found that these stem cells could be used to promote cell survival as they are immunologically immature and are able to differentiate into different types of cells.

Dr Eduardo Cruz, chief executive officer of Cell PRAXIS BioRio, pointed out what while hUCBs can only be collected at birth, MenSCs could be taken each month from a women over a 40-year stretch.

This comes after scientists revealed that a new brain scanning technique being tested in NHS memory clinics could be used to detect Alzheimer's disease and deliver results within just 24 hours.

The technique uses a computer programme to compare the brain scan of a patient with 1,200 other images of brains with Alzheimer's.
