Barchester's Paul Courtney was awarded the Management Excellence award at the Independent Healthcare Awards on Thursday.
Mr Courtney turned around the fortunes of the Mont Tryon Care Home in Torquay, which had been underperforming before his appointment.
As well as an excellent reputation, the home now has a five star dining rating and a fully functioning bar, called Bar Chester.
"I am thrilled at winning this prestigious award. It reflects the hard work and dedication to the highest standards of care by the team at Mont Tryon. We ensure that our residents live their lives to the full," said Mr Courtney on receiving the award.
He was appointed in 2000 and the changes he has made have led to the Commission for Social Care Inspection now giving the home excellent reports.
Mike Parsons, managing director of Barchester Healthcare, also expressed his delight at Thursday's result, praising the achievements of the managers and adding that it was a demonstration of "their individual commitment to excellence in quality care".
