Interviews for carers claiming benefits now voluntary

15th September 2005

From next month carers claiming Carer's Allowance will no longer have to attend compulsory work-focused interviews, according to Headway's Autumn News.

The requirement for people claiming benefits to attend the interviews was introduced three years ago and was met with mixed reaction.

Many carers welcomed the chance to discuss their future work options but others saw the compulsory interviews as unnecessary and insensitive.

Following lobbying by Carers UK, Jobcentreplus now has announced that work-focused interviews will be voluntary from October 31st 2005.

This means the interviews will now only be for those carers wishing to enquire about re-entering the workforce and will focus on supporting someone back to work.
