Govt launch new employer pledge to improve workplace mental health

The government have launched a new pledge for employers designed to improve mental health in the workplace.

Nine organisations have already signed up to the Public Health Responsibility Deal, which is hoped to bring about better support for those with mental health conditions.

Signatories are committed to the principles of the Mental Health Workplace Adjustments Guide to ensure mentally ill workers are properly managed.

This includes offering employees the flexibility they need to stay in work and making reasonable workplace adjustments.

Lord Earl Howe, health minister, commented: "A good working environment is crucial for our wellbeing – and it can help aid the recovery of mental health conditions.

"However, stigma and lack of understanding means many remain unemployed or underutilised."

It is hoped that the pledge will encourage employers to think about the changes they can make to help those with mental health problems.

Charity Mind worked with the government to develop the principles, which stress the human and financial cost of mental health issues in the workplace.
