Government reveals new rights for NHS patients

The Department of Health has announced that NHS patients are set to be given new rights.

Proposed changes to the NHS Constitution would include the right to single sex accommodation for the first time, health minister Norman Lamb said.

There will also stronger rights for patients to be told about mistakes, as well as a right to have complaints acknowledged within three working days.

"We are clear that the founding principles of the NHS - free at the point of delivery to all, regardless of their ability to pay - will not only be supported, but reinforced," said Mr Lamb.

He added the government wants to make sure it is free to all, no matter a person's age or the size of their bank balance.

Data revealed by the Department of Health last month showed the vast majority of patients are satisfied with the level of care they receive from the NHS.
