Government to provide £5.4m volunteering fund

The government has announced that it is to provide £5.4 million of funding to local health and care programmes.

Health minister Norman Lamb stated that the cash will go to charities in the health and social care sectors.

He explained he is excited to be able to make the announcement, adding: "I'd like to encourage people to get involved and share their experiences to make these projects a success."

It was revealed by the government that the fund is going to be divided between 13 organisations over three years, after each charity was selected for having excellence in a specific area.

StreetGames is among the bodies to be helped as a result of the government's fund, with the organisation supporting young disadvantaged women who need support to develop a healthy and more active lifestyle.

Mr Lamb recently announced that the government is set to provide NHS patients with new rights.
