Donations soar for motor neurone disease charity

Donations have surpassed the £5 million mark in the UK for a leading motor neurone disease (MND) charity, following a social media drive.

The 'ice bucket challenge' has raised awareness and money for the American charity Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association, which is known as MND in this country.

JustGiving has claimed around £5.4 million had been donated as of September 7th by around 850,000 people, BBC News reports. Also important is the fact that awareness has been bolstered in the condition, which affects thousands of people around the world.

Many high-profile celebrities have posted videos of themselves being soaked by ice water, including David Beckham, Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian. 

Individuals nominate a couple of their friends on social media site Facebook to undertake the challenge once they've done it themselves. 

MND generally affects more men than women and tends to be diagnosed from the age of 40.
