Cutting edge medical technologies backed by government

The government has announced it is providing funding to a range of innovative cutting edge medical technologies, including a new prototype cancer test.

Professor Dame Sally Davies, chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser at the Department of Health, revealed five projects have been given funding from the government.

"The NHS needs inventive medical technologies to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease for its patients," she said.

Professor Davies added that the government's programme of funding provides a route for researchers to develop innovative their ideas into a reality that may have a significant impact on patients.

Among the projects is a new smartphone designed to help widen access to HIV testing in GP surgeries, pharmacies, community settings and developing countries.

Secretary of state for health Jeremy Hunt announced at an Age UK conference earlier in the month that the UK government wants the country to be a world leader in medical technology.
