Charity: Nutrition vital for elderly health

Age Concern has teamed up with celebrities in a campaign to improve standards of nutrition on hospital wards.

The charity has created video clips - available via the youtube website - with actors including Steve Mangan, who is well-known for his role as Dr Guy in TV sitcom The Green Wing.

Light humour is used in the sketches, which have been created to raise awareness among healthcare professionals and the wider public of the importance nutrition plays in aiding an elderly person's recovery from illness.

Head of public affairs at Age Concern Patrick South said: "These unique video clips illustrate simple solutions that can be implemented by nurses on a local level to help solve a national problem."

Mr South added that missing a meal in hospital can carry the same risk for an older person as missing their medication.

Age Concern was recently in the news when it stated that more urgent action needs to be taken in order to tackle the problem of fuel poverty.

Director general Gordon Lishman said social tariffs are currently "unfit for purpose" and more needs to be done to address payment inequalities in fuel bills.
