Cardiff mental health research centre to get £3m

A new centre in Cardiff will receive £3 million from the Welsh government to carry out research into new treatments for mental illness.

Led by Professor Nick Craddock of Cardiff University, the National Centre for Mental Health will focus on neuro-developmental disorders, including ADHD and autism, as well as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and degenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease.

The centre aims to chart the development of mental illnesses from childhood to old age, working together with frontline professionals from all over Wales to find causes and triggers of disorders and developing new treatments for them.

"Mental health problems can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, gender or social background," said Professor Craddock.

"That is why it is crucial that we have a national centre that brings frontline professionals in all parts of Wales together."

Later this month, the Brain & Behaviour Research Foundation in New York will recognise five scientists for their outstanding contributions to mental health research.
