An MP has campaigned for improved dementia care – both in care homes and within the community.
Gordon Marsden, who represents Blackpool south, is a member of the All-Party MPs dementia group and has done extensive work with the Alzheimer's Society – both in Blackpool and on a national scale.
Speaking to the Blackpool Citizen, Mr Marsden said that "raising the level of public and professional awareness and support mechanisms for family and friends of those suffering dementia is at the heart of the current initiatives".
In particular, Mr Marsden has focused his own efforts on raising awareness of the condition and improving the commitment from health providers regarding skills and training.
Fellow north-west MP Ivan Lewis is spearheading a national dementia strategy in government and Mr Marsden said he would like to "pay particular tribute" to Mr Lewis.
This follows news that acclaimed author Terry Pratchett has donated £500,000 towards Alzheimer's research.
