Beware of winter vomiting disease

As the cold weather sets in, older adults are being warned about the risks of the winter vomiting disease.

Britons are advised to be vigilant in protecting against the condition, also known as norovirus, as it is an ever-changing virus that is highly infectious.

Dr Martin Wiselka, consultant in general medicine and infectious diseases, explained: "[Norovirus] is a bit like the flu in that it is a virus that changes all the time.

"You only need to take in a few of those viruses to become ill yourself, so anyone who is vomiting - or even droplets from coughing - [could spread the virus]."

Enclosed spaces, such as hospitals, are also key locations where the disease can easily spread.

To protect against the condition, Dr Wiselka states that washing hands after going to the toilet is extremely important.

If someone has the disease avoid contact and make sure everything is as clean as possible. This will stop the virus from lingering and causing others to get infected.

Any condition that induces excessive vomiting poses a risk to the health of older adults, as they may become dehydrated.

Ensure that infected persons are having a consistent intake of fluids to avoid severe consequences.
