Barchester extends premium care in Wiltshire

2nd March 2006

Barchester Healthcare has strengthened its position as the number one provider of high quality residential and nursing home care in the UK with its latest acquisition of Milford House Nursing Home in Wiltshire near Salisbury.

Milford House was built in 1870 by the Duke of Ilchester and is situated within 3.5 acre grounds just a mile and a half from the centre of Salisbury.

Milford House has a warm country house feel with a variety of lounges and dining areas to meet everyone’s preferences. In addition to its spacious lounges and grounds, the home has 66 resident room, the majority of which are en suite.

Barry Sweetbaum, Chief Operating Officer at Barchester Healthcare said: “We are delighted to be adding Milford House to our portfolio of care home properties. Barchester Healthcare has always upheld the highest standards and we are pleased that the first class team at Milford House will be joining our family to continue to build on the fabulous reputation that have worked so hard to create for the home in the local community.

In this initial period it will be paramount that we get to know the residents and staff of Milford House to better understand if there is anything we can do to improve upon the services or environment within the home. At Barchester we know our homes are first and foremost our resident’s home and we do all that we can to cater for their needs, interest and preferred way of life.”

Milford House Homecare, a separate business, will continue to be run by its current owners and has been renamed Abicare Services. Their priorities remain continuity of care and service. They have retained the home care team and will continue to use their six years of experience in home care throughout the Wiltshire community, where they are the largest provider of home care services.

Milford House joins Barchester Healthcare’s rapidly expanding portfolio of over 170 homes, ranging from Thurso, near John o’Groats in Scotland down to Launceston in Cornwall. The house was bought and converted for residential care in 1988 by Milford House Homecare, which moving forward will be known as Abicare.

Barchester Healthcare is committed to pursuing growth through a combination of development, acquisition and partnership with charities and the public sector. The acquisition of Milford House demonstrates Barchester’s ability to work with other companies while continuing to drive forward its mission of delivering the highest quality care and support possible to the residents that it looks after.

Cathy Fountain, Matron of Milford House said “We’re looking forward to joining Barchester and making the transition as smooth as possible. Naturally, we want to maintain the high standards we have always been known for and to keep on getting better.”

Mr Mike Mason, the previous owner, commented "Selling a nursing home is about much more than getting the right price. What distinguished Barchester as a buyer was their commitment, their early willingness to put substance behind their word, and the fact that all the people we met were really pleasant. The whole process was conducted in a non-adversarial and constructive way that gave us confidence, not only in the sale going through, but also in the way they would look after the staff and residents once the purchase was complete."
