Are stroke patients getting the right aftercare?

After illness, it is important that people receive the right aftercare upon leaving hospital. However, it has emerged that many stroke patients aren't getting the care they need.

According to the Stroke Association, 38 per cent of people they surveyed that had survived a stroke claimed that they did not get the sufficient aftercare to bring about the best possible outcome.

What's more, 58 per cent of respondents who had experienced a stroke in the last three years claimed they had only received one follow-up assessment.

Jon Barrick, chief executive at the Stroke Association, commented: "More people than ever are surviving a stroke and that's a welcome improvement. But many stroke survivors tell us that after all the effort to save their lives they then feel abandoned when they return home."

Consequently, the charity is calling for the NHS and local authorities to live up to their responsibilities and improve the support systems available to stroke survivors.
