Age Concern offers help to elderly in the cold
7th January 2009

Gordon Lishman, the director general of Age Concern, has put out a message on behalf of his charity to highlight the importance of keeping warm this winter after cold weather was forecast.

He stated that keeping active in the snow and freezing temperatures is the most important thing to do to avoid the cold and avoid being vulnerable.

Mr Lishman also reiterated his point of unclaimed benefits, noting that £5 billion is available for many elderly people who are struggling to afford their food and heating bills.

He said: "It has never been more essential for the government to launch a high profile campaign to get vital cash into the pockets of older people who need it‚ with a view to moving towards an automatic benefits payment system."

Mr Lishman also urged older people to contact Age Concern's freephone helpline on 0800 00 99 66 should they want to find out what they are entitled to.

Age Concern's main focus is on wiping out ageism, challenging any cases of unfair treatment brought about by such unfair discrimination.
