Activities at Red Oaks Care Home

We believe in making a difference to the lives of people living here with us and ensure that we provide a lifestyle full of choice and stimulation that is centred around each resident here at Red Oaks. This includes a whole host of varied activities, together with regular trips out around the region, taking full advantage of the home’s minibus. Our aim is to enable each person we support to continue to do the things they enjoy for as long as they possibly can.

Sue McHoy

Activities Coordinator

My role as activity coordinator at Red Oaks is ensuring that all residents have a full and varied activity program. Using our getting to know me books and knowing our residents backgrounds develop our activity program. Having lived in Henfield for the past 10 years I enjoy assisting residents maintaining and forming new the community connections.

I am passionate about my role, the part is having fun and making people smile.

Life at Red Oaks Care Home

Village Proms in the Park

Village Proms in the Park

Red Oaks Care Home in Henfield once again hosted the “Village Proms in the Park” event which has been going for the past 6 years. The event was organised by the Henfield based Brass Fusion Band and Royal Opera Singer Sidonie Winter.

This started as a jubilee concert and has now become annual event which raises funds for local charities. Red Oaks provides the venue and the legendary Red Oaks Pimms Tent.

This was a quintessential English summer event with everything from contemporary music from Abba to unusual songs from Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory, Sussex by the Sea and finally ending with the National Anthem.

Over 250 people attended the event, had a great time and enjoyed our food and drinks selection.

Our Divisional Winner

Louise Smith at Red Oaks in Henfield has been crowned Dementia Care Champion for Barchester’s south division in the Barchester Care Awards 2019, and has made it through to the national finals.

The awards celebrate staff and volunteers who go the extra mile for the benefit of individuals living in Barchester care homes. Categories range from ‘Registered Nurse of the Year’ and ‘Carer of the Year’ to ‘Maintenance Champion’ and ‘Team of the Year’.

More than 1,900 nominations were received from homes across the UK. All entries have been of a very high standard and Louise is thrilled to have been named top in the region.

As the winner for the south devision, Louise has automatically gone through to the national finals, where she will be interviewed by the judges for the last round of judging. In October, Louise will join the other finalists from across the UK at a special awards luncheon to celebrate their achievements and discover if they have won the national awarding title.

Festival of Gardens & Arts

The Henfield Festival of Gardens & Arts Weekend has been running for the past 20 years. Red Oaks has played a major part in the weekend for the past 15 years, as we have one of the largest Gardens in Henfield. Over the course of the weekend, we had many bands and orchestras playing in our grounds, and craft people were displaying their talents in Red Oak's grounds. All money raised over this year is going to Barchester's Charitable Foundation. Over the weekend, we had over 1,000 visitors to our garden.

International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day

We hosted a party for our nursing team to celebrate International Nurses Day, where we said thank our nurses and care staff, who make a real difference to the lives of those we support.

St David's Day

St David's Day

Everyone at Red Oaks was in high spirits as we celebrated the national day of Wales, with residents cooking traditional Welsh cakes and a visit from the local PCSO.

The Chanctonbury Challenge

The Chanctonbury Challenge

Groups from Upper Beeding, Steyning, Henfield, Partridge Green and St Peter's Primary Schools visited Red Oaks as part of the Chanctonbury Challenge.

This was part three of the challenge, an annual locality project created by teachers to encourage children to work together in a range of activities that will extend opportunities for creative thinking.

The children found out about the residents lives and looked at special items they had brought in, which included photographs, ornaments and medals.

After lots of discussion, questions and looking through booklets all about the residents, the afternoon culminated in the children producing a PowerPoint presentation on the computers about the life of each resident.
