Mo Dhachaidh Care Home in Ullapool

Mo Dhachaidh Care Home in Scotland is located in the beautiful rural North West Highlands in the fishing village of Ullapool. The village itself has a host of independent shops and restaurants offering local produce and places to eat. The home is nestled in the heart of the village and also provides premises for the local GP surgery and council office.

In the summer months Ullapool is vibrant and residents at Mo Dhachaidh enjoy walks to the sea front, the local pipe-band playing, music events at the Macphail Centre and trips to nearby Ardmair. In the winter months, local school children visit the home where residents enjoy the variety of musical instruments and singing.  Other visitors we have to the home include live musicians, Stella ( who is a trained therapy dog)  and of course our much loved dog Treacle, who visits several times a week.

Mo Dhachaidh offers high quality elderly care for up to 21 frail older people, including 24-hour nursing care, residential care and dementia. We are also able to offer short break and respite stays. Our dedicated and skilled team of qualified nurses and trained carers will be able to offer a care package to suit each individual resident to enable them to continue to have choice and freedom in a safe and comfortable environment. Mo Dhachaidh staff and residents ensure families and friends get a warm welcome and feel involved in the home and the care delivered to their friend or family member.

We would be delighted for you to visit and see for yourself the services that Mo Dhachaidh can provide.

Types of care

The greatest attribute of our small care team is that they really listen to residents and their families, who are best placed to voice how they wish to be supported. These views are then used to create a person-centred care plan, which is delivered by experienced carers and nurses, who are available 24 hours a day. With this person-centred approach, we are able to support older people with a variety of needs, including physical disabilities, dementia and life limiting conditions. Our focus is around the well-being of each resident and supporting their family members; we are able to do this alongside the GPs, chiropodist, occupational therapist, health visitor and social work team, all of whom are situated within the same building as the home. We strive to also meet residents' social and cultural needs and we actively encourage local talent to visit the home regularly, which includes a therapy dog, a 'gentle' exercise guru, an accordionist and a regular church service. We embrace our highland culture, with music and traditional Scottish foods and the occasional 'wee dram'. The home has received consistently 'good' ratings from the Care Inspectorate and the inspection report reflects our aim and hard work to ensure that residents at Mo Dhachaidh feel included in the local community.

Our Team

Wendy McGowan

General Manager

Hi, my name is Wendy, and I am the general manager here at Mo Dhachaidh. Welcome to our website!

I am originally from England, and moved with my family to Scotland in 2006. I started my career in the healthcare sector at age 18 and worked as a carer in a nursing home. Throughout my nurse training I regularly worked in this sector and, as a qualified nurse, often supported care homes in their provision of care.

I qualified as a nurse in 1996 and worked in emergency mental health team throughout the first 10 years of my nursing career. In that time, I developed a collaborative leadership style, and later on worked as a team leader for a specialist crisis intervention team in Southport.

The most rewarding part of my job is the relationships I have developed with residents, their family members and the staff who help support the people who live here. I am delighted that, through our provision of person-centred care, we have developed a homely atmosphere and a place people like to live in.
