Activities at Kernow House Care Home
Our Activities Coordinators organise varied and regular events. The activities that take place depend on what our residents tell us they are interested in and the feedback we get from their families. We currently have pop-up cafes where we socialise and maybe visit the hairdresser. We have regular live music events, a storyteller and visits from animals and we are often joined by families or friends during our social activities where they are always most welcome.
Living in Cornwall the surrounding countryside offers many beauty spots and we often have trips out to wherever our residents would like to go. At other times a walk to nearby shops or cafes is what we enjoy.
Louise is our hairdresser and she is with us twice a week. Louise also supports us during our weekly Namaste sessions where she offers hand massages in a relaxing environment. Every Thursday afternoon we have a time of worship supported by our local community. Our ice cream van, Kernow Kones, and our mobile pub, Kernow Keg, also make a weekly appearance. We have monthly clubs, when we play bingo or watch a film in our pop-up cinema. Residents on all units are invited to take part in a monthly Resident’s Meeting and they tell us what they would like.
Apart from these regular events, we also celebrate special occasions and often have musical entertainers to visit but we also make our own fun. All staff take part in fancy dress or charity events that we support and often what we do evolves through interaction between residents and care or activity staff. All this makes Kernow House a vibrant place to be where things happen both as group activities as well as on an individual level.
Bea Porup
Bea has many years of experience working in elderly care and both experience and training in dementia care. She has also worked extensively with people with Huntington's disease. Bea works closely with Sue, Jackie and our management team, nurses, carers and kitchen team to ensure our home has a vibrant environment with lots of events happening and varied opportunities for having both new and familiar experiences, making sure the people living here lead a rich and fulfilling life.

Life at Kernow House Care Home
Long Service Award
Rachel Yole is a carer and has worked at Kernow House since we opened. She received her 25 Year Long Service Award and was presented with a pin, a £250 gift card and a bottle of prosecco by manager Gail Griffiths.
Rachel has worked everywhere at Kernow and is a popular member of our team. She takes whatever comes her way in her stride and always has a ready smile. During her time at Kernow, Rachel has had five children and maybe that is the secret to her endless patience. Well done, Rachel!
Christmas Spirit
Christmas is always a busy time with lots of things happening at Kernow House. So far we have had carol singers around the home and we have displayed a tree in St Mary’s church for the Festival of Christmas Trees and Cribs. Fundraising this time has gone to the local branch of the HDA and we raised an impressive £194.28.
The final day was on National Elf Day when staff and residents dressed up as elves. It was good fun and as always a pleasure to support a charity close to our hearts.
Intergenerational Fun
We have a well-established working partnership with St Catherine’s Primary School. Every Tuesday afternoon during term time, a group of 14 children visit Petherwin for an hour to do intergenerational work. We get up to all sorts' there’s always lots of chatting and friendships are made. These visits are very popular and we always look forward to the joy and lively contact the children bring.
Remembrance Sunday
A few of us took part in the Remembrance Parade in Launceston town centre, where we laid a poppy wreath on the war memorial from all of us at Kernow House. It was very moving when we took at minute to stand by the memorial and reflect after the ceremony.
Of course, not everyone was able to go out and take part,so we made our indoor garden into a display of poppies for the occasion and took it around all the units. It is nice to be able to take part in events that are familiar to us, even though we may no longer be able to do so in a traditional manner.
Launceston Carnival
We had great fun when we took part in Launceston Carnival with walkers and a mini-bus dressed as ‘Seabed Friends’. In the run up to the carnival we were busy cutting up and painting cardboard fish and making sea weed out of plastic bags.
We have also been to the beach to pick up nets and other items washed up from the sea. On the day itself we decorated a bus with these items before taking part in the carnival procession with residents sitting in the bus and staff dancing in front of it.
We won first in the Community/Organisation category and also took home the Best Decorated trophy. It was a fantastic experience for all of us not least the residents who were still smiling and waving long after we returned back home.
