Activities at Fordmill Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Julia Constandache

Senior Activities Coordinator

I’m Julia and I have been working at Fordmill since December 2016. I really enjoy art and studied Graphic Design & Illustration in Dundee. I love being with people and using my skills to improve their quality of life and bring a smile to their faces through crafts, games and all sorts of other activities.

I plan out the activities, either for groups or individuals, according to specific needs and interests. It’s a real joy to get to know residents and their loved ones and I’m grateful to Barchester for giving me the opportunity to work with them and bring some sunshine into the residents’ lives.

Oktoberfest celebrations

Residents celebrated Oktoberfest with plenty of beer, sausages and German music. Everyone enjoyed spending time with their fellow residents.

International Day of Sign Language

To mark International Day of Sign Language on September 23rd and to learn some new skills, staff and residents at Fordmill care home, in Montrose, enjoyed a Sign Language demonstration.

Staff and residents learnt some basic sign language with Marion Simpson, one of our residents. Marion was a Social Worker and worked with deaf and hard of hearing people for over 20 years in Paisley and Greenock. She would interpret for deaf people at medical appointments, and other appointments, help them fill in forms and support them in a variety of ways. She would also organise social events such as bus trips, Christmas parties for their children and dances. The deaf and hard of hearing community could dance well as they felt the beat and vibrations of the music to keep to time.

Wine tasting with Unity Wines

We had a lovely time joining Hospitality Manager, Christophe Noel and special guests Lee Isaacs DipWSET and Nick Parker from Unity Wines and Spirits – as they introduced us to wine tasting techniques, the history of wine and wine making, as well as consumer attitudes.

Our residents had the opportunity to try a variety of wines from sparkling and white to rose and red, alongside a selection of delicious treats.

It was a wonderful experience, enjoyed by all.

English National Ballet virtual event

We celebrated Last Night of the Proms virtually with members of English National Ballet’s Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Music Director Gavin Sutherland.

We listened and danced along as members of the orchestra took us on a magical, musical journey. English National Ballet Philharmonic is made up of many of the country’s top musicians, and boasts considerable experience in all forms of music-making. With insights and anecdotes into what it takes to conduct an orchestra for a world-class ballet company, this special concert got our feet tapping, arms waving and hearts singing!

It was a wonderful experience, enjoyed by all.

V&A Scottish Galleries talk

We had a lovely time joining Becca Clark and James Wylie – members of V&A Dundee’s exhibitions team – as they took us on a virtual tour of the museum’s incredible Scottish Design Galleries.

We were introduced to the wide range of unique objects at the galleries from architecture and engineering, jewellery and textiles to theatre and their fascinating stories.

And we were able to learn more about the importance of all objects in telling the rich and varied history of Scottish design.

It was a lovely talk, enjoyed by all.

National Dog Day

Here at Fordmill we love dogs and we marked National Dog Day in style with a visit from Alfie to delight of all our residents. Alfie’s visit provoked many stories and shared memories of their own pets which they have had.

We had fun reminiscing, looking at photos of our residents’ dogs from the past and we even created a picture board, to enable everyone to share memories of the dogs they owned.

Our local pet therapy organisation visited us to make the day even more special and we all got involved in a dog show competition, and themed quizzes.

It was a lovely day, enjoyed by all.
