Stem cell treatment to go ahead for Scottish stroke patients

Scientists from the UK are going to test the world's first human stem cell treatments for stroke patients, making it the first study of its kind.

John Sinden, the chief scientist at stem cell organisation ReNeuron, explained that its Guildford-based centre has finally won approval to trial a pioneering therapy, labelled ReN001, for five years with a dozen sample patients from north of the border.

Dr Keith Muir said he was delighted at the deal and added that stem cells have the potential to repair brain tissue lost as a result of a stroke.

He continued: "At this stage, we are primarily seeking to establish the safety and feasibility of this form of treatment and, if successful, we hope that it will lead on to larger studies looking at the effects of the treatment on patient recovery."

Earlier this month, scientists from the Columbia University Medical Center in New York found that there were positive effects of the Mediterranean diet on stroke risk.
